The small guys get bitten
Since my (ahem) downsizing from a major online brokerage I've been working as a consultant / contract network admin for a lot of Mom and Pop businesses. These are the people that get bitten by backup problems.

Company A had an office assistant that changed tapes every morning and heard the whir of the tape drive as her acknowlegement that a backup was being performed. One burglary later they found that all their tapes that they had meticulously kept off site were no good. Their last decent backup was six months old and they were lucky to find that.

Company B had a similar story except their "server" (Windows XP Pro with one IDE hard drive) had a disk failure that made all of their current data disappear unless you count the 3500 dollar drive savers fee. Ouch. Their last good backup was at least a year old.

Do you see a common thread here? These companies do not have the time to learn to protect their data nor the budget to retain regular IT services so they rely on whirring sounds and hope their data is good. It's a poor choice in my opinion.
