Watch Your Backup...
It seems that the scale of backups is the real pivot point.
In a small-scale business or non-profit you need only make backups of contacts and important files along with making sure that you have no viruses (viri is incorrect...) that can potentially corrupt your data. CDs/CD-RWs or some other small-sized removable media works well. Since reloading an OS and all supporting and supported software is not as difficult as making sure that you haven't lost critical info, whether you image your systems is a matter of taste and budget.
For larger (and progressively larger operations) redundancy may be a safer option. In an ideal world there would be no viruses, trojans or cretins that make them. However, we don't live there. In my experience working with web development and hosting companies, redundancy is always the better part of valor. If a machine dies or is otherwise incapacitated a second machine that is located elsewhere is turned on and the site is up, with little or no downtime.
If a large operation were to break its IS/IT into at least two separate, un-networked sites the chances for complete data corruption becomes less and less likely.
Update all info on one system group, then transport the updated files to the server via any manner that seems safest (sneaker net works pretty well for this.) You then have two or more system groups being backed up on a scheduled basis. If all other steps (firewalls, av software, data verification, etc.) are taken this is a nearly disaster-free method. Since the data is backed up twice (or more if you have greater redundancy) backups can be verified before reloading in the event of a crash.
Obviously you'll need to spend incrementally more for computers and backup systems, but it won't double the amount and it will be safer than relying on one set of backups...
