Watch your backup - True
Yes it's true. Even the most expensive backup solutions produce about a 60-70% restoration sucess rate. Over the years, there have been critical file resotration failures, incomplete backups with no error verifications, and lots and lots of 'finger-pointing' at IT staff. The plain fact is that Tape-based backup are not reliable enough to be depended on for critical data. Colleagues, as well as myself have at times opted for more simple systems, such as a 'real file' backups to backup drives, burning DVD backups and the like. These in my 15 years of expreience have been the ONLY 100% trustworthy solutions. The Tape method belongs to another era, not ours.
