One of the challenges with tape is that it gives you a point in time copy of the data in your systems. Typically daily for the last month, then weekly or monthly for the past year. If you have a rolling corruption there is huge potential for never being able to recover data as it may have fallen off the backup cycle. The backup cycle itself is driven by constraints in the technology and the fact that people can't afford the tape stock or manage the processes of doing hourly or daily incremental copies.

It's in this area I can see disk based systems having an advantage. If it ever existed, even intraday, then it's stored in the disk backup pool, ready to be recalled at the touch of a button.

Just my 2cents worth.
