Conflicting Objectives
Users receive single OS's bought at industrial discounts when they buy systems. MS 98's and 95's in homes show few home users understand os's, upgrades, and security. Financially, nobody is interested in their os security level.
Industrial business systems need mass management, stream filters to program data management and displays (pdf, flash, java, antivirus, network shares), and network system control in their OS. Unfortunately, only hackers, not system managers, seem have enough knowledge to tie into those interfaces. The default security, as accessible from the internet, seems to be set to freely develop and manage.
ISP'S are clueless and legally are restricted from system mangement even when it impacts their network bandwidth. ISP anti-virus filtering and packet activity monitoring would help until attached system have a more secure OS. Microsoft, AOL, and YAHOO are trying to be somewhat responsible for the access they are providing to the net.
As a user, I don't provide user names and passwords to company security pages on YAHOO, Hotmail, or ZDNET hosted site. Shares on my network are read only.
How many bots does it take to secure the winning bid on EBAY and at what rates?
