Patches, patches, and more patches
Is it any surprise really? The Microsoft-haters await each set of patches with baited breath, so they can pounce on it like so many Lilliputians, hoping to bring the monster down.

But of course this is a double-edged sword and they end up cutting their noses off despite their faces when suddenly it is announced that another major software manufacturer has, regrettably, to announce that it's product too is flawed and requires some patching. And then we get recriminations, flaming, and the general mayhem that comes when anyone has the temerity to mention this fact.

I've said it many times: no one (not even myself) writes clean code anymore. I defy anyone to sit down at their workstation with their favorite editor and programming language and write Windows, Oracle 10, Firefox, Symantec Anti-virus, or anything else of such complexity and have it come away clean. Code has become too complex and programming skills are becoming marginal. heck, most virus writers are cut-and-pasters with only rudimetary knowledge of programming!

And this goes on and on, because if people bought cars that were clunkers they would take them back to the dealer and demand refunds, the same cannot be said of software. The general public has not raised a hew-and-cry over the sorry state of the programs they rely on, switching to alternatives and forcing the industry to make changes, because they are too apathetic to care. They scream and yell at their computers and curse Microsoft under their breath, and then go right back and use the same malfunctioning programs!

Neither side should trumpet over all these patches. Microsoft-detractors and pundits alike should instead look to see what can be done to keep the need for these things from appearing in the first place.
