wait a minute....
Oh, Red Hat 5.2? Yeah, yer right Linux ain't ready for prime time, uh huh, you've been reading too much Lovecox Michaelson and BELIEVING it.

yeah it did suck. actually i still hate RH on the desktop

Linux is "Too much time wasted to get it to work, still doesn't do half of what Windows does." Yup, I bought a $60 SuSE 10 package, had it installed with a running DNS server, DHCP server, email server, web server and a full functioning desktop with two office suites, a bunch of graphics editors, several email clients and a bunch of games ... all in less than two hours on a 700MHz, 1GB memory machine. Did an upgrade to a 2100+ Athlon with 1GB memory running SuSE 9.3 in less than an hour and a half.

what does running a DNS, DHCP and All the rest of it have to do with a desktop. all of which by the way can be done with free 3rd party utilities or built in OS components. I can do it in way wayyyyyyyy less that 2 hours and i do it on my PIII600 overclocked to 861, on my box XP installs faster by far, but it doesn't install as much as your typical linux distro.

Point 1 - With Windows it would have taken much more than a grand to do it (4100 for XP Home? Can't run a decent server on that, John. If you were a REAL sysadmin you'd know that).

it's 60 for OEM home and i think 150 for retail. if you need a decent server OS i would recommend you buy a server OS, regardless of kernel. XP home can do 10 SMB concurrent connections and as i stated earlier can run all the other little widgets you mentioned for free as well.

Point 2 - With Windows it would have taken MUCH longer to do it (Switching disks alone between Windows server, Microsoft Office, Photoshop and would take you an hour alone; SuSE 10.0 comes on DVDs).

you switch disks? i mount ISO's in XP home blazing fast, screw optical media. Why use photoshop? GIMP's fine for my light duty stuff

Point 3 - You could only do it on ONE machine for that $1,000+. (I can use my $60 package to do it on as many machines as I want.)

where are you pullin $1000 buck from? so far we have 150 bucks for the XP license. Although you are correct each computer needs one.

"Somebody who actually thinks their Linux machine is actually as good as a Windows system for the desktop." I'd really be interested in what you think you can do with your Windoze desktop that I can't do with SuSE Linux 10.

Oh, and you don't even have to spend the 60 bucks! You can download the entire SuSE Linux 10.0 package for FREE. Why don't you do that, try it out ... and then come back here with some more drivel.

free yes, supported no, and you only get limited patching, and the product gets more or less retired after 6 monthes.

linux on the desktop is kinda sorta ok. it wouldn't work for me, as i grew up on windows and i am extremely capable of dealing with it and i dont have a time to dink around with a poorly supported beta version of the desktop. Plus i can count the number of open source app's that didn't make me wanna puke on one hand.
