Owning up
Let's face it, there is no perfect code. Nobody, myself included, writes clean code. And the more complex the software, the greater the probability that there will be errors and oversights. Good project management and thorough testing will often overcome this, but in this day and age of rapid advances in hardware and software capabilities, the need to "get it out now" often overrides the need for quality assurance.

If you want to be a rabid MS-hater, that's your perogative. I have no love for them myself, but I use their products and have no complaints. Do I wish I didn't have to patch the software so often -- sure. Do I wish they would come out with more mature products -- sure. But given the climate and the complexity of the code and the decline of techinical skill and programming ability, what more can we ask for?

At leat they're owning up to the problems and trying to solve them. Credit where credit is due, but they could save themselves a lot of headaches if they tightened up their procedures. And don't think it's only MS; plenty of other software out there has proven itself vulnerable in recent days (Firefox and Symantec Anti-virus to name just a couple). It's sympotamtic of the general decline of software.

None of this invalidates my original point: the average user is just that -- average. They're not tech-savvy and not very bright. And they are not clamoring for companies like Microsoft to do anything about these problems. Until the common market wakes up and users band together to reject bad software, status quo.
