Modern distros
The simplest solution to the "new hardware" issue is USB. I run Mandrake 10 on a 600MHz PC. Brand new digital camera - plug it into USB, FLphoto starts up, I have full camera support. Similar tale for scanners, printers, cordless mice, card readers, external drives, etc.

For office use, where users use what they're given, any one of the major distributions could be configured with a set of the appropriate tools. Nothing is "embedded" as with Windows. You install, onto the Linux OS, the applications you want, no more, no less. Contrast with Windows. The OS is integrated with a number of Microsoft proprietary applications which you can replace but never un-install. Their security drop offs are Windows OS drop offs.

There is virtually never any need to recompile a Linux kernel.

Some distros can be run from a CD without installing them to hard disk - worth a try, if you're evaluating. There are many aplications on this CD too.
