...why is it that any software developed in the last ten years by a major software publisher have a buffer overflow problem? Buffers do overflow when excess data is placed in the buffer but why should any new software ever allow a bufferoverflow to occur?
This is a problem that the first programmers discovered. Long before Kerrigan and Ritchie. Even when they created the C programming language, they issued best practices on preventing buffer overflows. That was a few decades ago. So why do we still have them? Because some programmers are lazy and although MS, Google, Intel, Borland, COrel, The Mozilla Foundation, etc., can always fire their lazy butts after the fact, the fact is that it will still be after the fact.
