How do VM's help?
If you use an exploit to gain root access to a system, how does running in isolation help? For example, if I gain dba access to your database, it doesn't matter which thread I'm running in, your entire database is compromised. You don't have to mess with any other application, you just have to mess with the important ones.

Sure, you backups and stuff can help, but the damage is already done. I've already taken your credit card info or whatever you have in that database.
