Actually I was arguing XP not Vista
>>I only point this out because your arguing things about an OS that won't be released for another year at best<<

I didn't mean to imply that all these features were in Vista. Those features are actually in XP. The only feature I was talking about that's in Vista but not XP is LUA. This is the primary reason why I'm so confused as to why anyone would argue that Windows is "inherently" unsafe. Every OS is "inherently" unsafe. It's how you configure and protect it. I do agree that Linux is easier to secure, but I don't think Windows is that far behind.

But otherwise, I do agree. I would want to say that outbound firewalls actually can be effective on the machine level as well. The key is, as you mention, the user has to LET the program. For the average user who doesn't realize he installed a trojan, this can be a life saver as suddenly an unrecognized program attempts to access the internet but is prevented from doing so. Again, if the virus is able to somehow gain root access, it doesn't matter which OS you have. You're hosed. Again, I think it comes down to having an educated user although I certainly agree the OS should make a better attempt at preventing this from happening.
