IMO, you're missing the point
Using your car analogy, Windows is a car that can be started with a screwdriver because the manufacturer (MS) builds their cars with a hole in the hood. And then weld the hood in place (i.e. closed code) so no one else can correct the problem.

Now they want to sell you something to cover the hole in the hood (that shouldn?t be there in the first place).

You are correct when you say disconnect your computer from the Internet. Windows computers should never be connected to a public network.
