"The electoral college is not a realistic representation of the voters."
But it was never intended to be. The electoral college system was set up to ensure that the large States didn't run roughshod over the small States; the same reason we have a Senate where every State has equal representation, regardless of population. Keep in mind, we don't live in a Democracy, we live in a Republic. If this were a true Democracy, the American people would vote on every single issue that the government now deals with. Why would we need a Congress, then?
"The power lies in Congress? True, but there is no minority voice in the Oval Office. And when Congress has the president's back, things can get ugly. "
Again, you're criticizing the 2-party system, not Bush. The same situation would exist (and has existed) if the President and Congress were both Democratic. Maybe the answer is to have a Constitutional requirement that Congress be of a different party than the President, or at least a certain percentage. But then, that would take away the right of the people to elect whomever they want. Which is more important?
"They attempted to outlaw the filibuster, thus hushing the minority voice, the constitutionally protected minority voice. That is nothing short of a threat to freedom, and a Hitler-ian attempt to create an elite ruling class."
There's nothing sacred about the filibuster; it has no basis in the Constitution. It's an artifice created by the Congress itself. There are other ways that a minority voice can be assured. Threats to the filibuster are no threat to anyone's freedom. Now, if the majority party of Congress were to restrict the minority's right to speak at all, that would be a threat to freedom.
