It's the little things
You're right in implying that Bush didn't create the maze, he just found the way to cut through the walls. The system has never been perfect, but it has become so 'workable' that is hardly functions as intended anymore. The electoral college is not a realistic representation of the voters. I do not believe that there is a roughly 50-50 ideological split in this country. Some issues still have a consensus, some are as divided as they have ever been. These are far from the most turbulent times this country has faced recently, yet the abuses of power are more prevalent now than they have been. The power lies in Congress? True, but there is no minority voice in the Oval Office. And when Congress has the president's back, things can get ugly. They attempted to outlaw the filibuster, thus hushing the minority voice, the constitutionally protected minority voice. That is nothing short of a threat to freedom, and a Hitler-ian attempt to create an elite ruling class.
