In theory, I agree with everything you say
In practice, every person's vote counts, as long as that party is going to win your state anyway. Both of Generalisimo Bush's elections wins were suspicious. One of them was awarded in court. What an excellent proxy! Why bother even holding elections anymore? Why not just select the next president based on polling data?

The time limit on the presidency is an important check on what is easily the largest concentration of power in US government, despite the framer's intentions. We have seen firsthand the power that a unified (read: single-party) Congress and President wields. TWO supreme court nominations, including the Chief Justice! The Patriot act. An attempt to outlaw the filibuster, a tool that checks the majority's power!

Why shouldn't he? Because Americans didn't elect a king, despite what Bush may think.
