ZoneAlarm Goes Pure Commercial
Let's see, how can we get more people to upgrade? Let's widely publicize a substantial security hole in the basic firewall function and claim not to be able to fix it in the free version, only in the paid version.

I, for one, didn't realize that it was ZoneAlarm's official policy to allow known vulnerabilities to persist in the free firewall while fixing them only in the paid version. This is useful info. Pro used to be primarily distinguished by adding spyware, virus, and other protections, but it would seem these were not as effective at marketing the paid versions as desired, so now they're deliberately weakening the basic firewall function in the free version and patching holes in only the paid version. Since this has been published, it is only a matter of time before it is used, and ZoneAlarm has stated they will not fix it - making the product now officially insecure by design.

Better yet, how many other known vulnerabilities exist in the free product that they _aren't_ telling you about and only intend to fix in the paid version? Doesn't make me feel very secure, but then, I guess I have to pay for that...
