Flawed, but fun and promising -- Plus a link to a detailed review
orkut.com is off to a slightly rocky, but still quite promising start.

I've been playing with the service for several days (though it's now down for maintenance / upgrading), and have already been fascinated at the friendly and informative communities that have sprung up.

At around 3,000 members the day I joined, it jumped to over 8,000 members just a couple of days later. I have no doubt that it'll be over 20K strong within a week after it reopens.

---

orkut.com is, indeed, a bit of a Friendster clone, but that's not entirely bad. Sure, the interface looks more playful than business-like, but it's deliciously speedy and already quite a bit more powerful than what the feature-poor and molasses-slow Friendster has offered to date.

Additionally, the service has -- with a few exceptions -- been peopled with quite thoughtful and interesting folks (not counting yours truly here, so cut me some slack :D)... again, in pleasant contrast with the uber-hipper-than-thou feel of Friendster.

The questions I'm pondering now are:
- Will both social and business networkers be encouraged to co-exist successfully on orkut in the future?
- Will the overall civility and openness of the service survive a crush of new members (witness what happened to Usenet, for example)?

In the meantime, I humbly invite you to check out my early review of orkut, and I welcome your feedback!

Regards,
Adam
