ActiveX is a feature
ActiveX is needed for a lot of web pages to work and the fact that Firefox doesn't have it makes it unusable in some cases.

ActiveX is a feature, and any feature in any software can be exploited. ActiveX can be turned off in IE and it can be added to Mozilla Firefox. ActiveX for untrusted sites pretty much defaults to off in Windows XP SP2 and even trusted sites will require that the user actively clicks "install". Just hitting the enter key will default to "no". ActiveX in itself is not a bug. It can be used for malicious code but so can .exe. The only question is if the warning mechanism is sufficient and in XP SP2 it is.
