I am a good boy (sometimes)
I'd rather put Linux on the machine ... problem is she "likes" XP and her PC just the way it is. The OS is the "home" edition so it must be ok is her argument. When I suggest changing things all I get is "All I want to do is use it for the net so why would I want to change it".

This is the whole point of why M$ MUST patch everything in sight. My mother in that sense is no different to the vast majority of home users. They see there are 2 different XP's - home and pro and assume that the home edition is a nice safe version where they can't do any damage. The argument is that the pro version will be the one where you can play around and get yourself into all sorts of trouble because that's for "Professionals". It's a great piece of marketing from M$ - much better than their bloatware.

Once you've got the home user they are very resistant to change. I tried to persuade her to use Firefox but she likes IE because she's used it. Go around my workplace and you hear the same story from all the guys - their wives, sisters, brothers, mothers etc don't want to use anything except IE because they know it and why should they change. Telling them it leaks like a sieve is not a good enough reason for them to change.

I take it you're not volunteering to adopt my Mother then??
