Why would anyone not have the Windows updates on their computer? Do they think they are special and won't get hit with all the viruses out there?

It has nothing to do with feeling "special..." I can think of lots of valid reasons...

1.) SOME Windows patches can cause problems. For instance... After having installed XP on a particular machine, I sent it to Windows Update. I downloaded a plethora of patches and had 'em all get installed. ONE of those patches stopped the machine from booting properly. It would get just so far and then quit. Explorer.exe would not finish loading. Booting to safe mode let me uninstall some of those patches until the machine finally booted in normal mode.

2.) Having the latest and greatest patches is NOT a guarantee that something else didn't get broken. New exploits are being found and some of them even have an effect on SP2.

3) Having a DECENT antivirus, antispam/spy/adware app or apps installed cuts your risk to getting infected significantly.

4.) MOST email borne viruses and a lot of the spy/ad/malware out there use SOCIAL ENGINEERING to get you to open the e-mail and run the attachment. As long as you don't fall for the gimmick being used, you should be ok. A little education goes a VERY long way.

So this whole "If you don't patch, you will be infected and therefore screwed" myth is nothing more than more of the same chicken little drivel.
