Bug hunters, software firms in uneasy alliance

I?ve absolutely nothing against

anyone collaborating for free to any open project, but I always wondered how these "widget experts living in Hong Kong, Australia, Britain, the US and France, and all working on the Widget code, in their own time, at their leisure" were doing for their own living (i.e. to pay their bills).

Are they all retired engineers? Are they all unpaid students? Or are they also a lot of developers paid by real corporations doing real businesses and who don?t play the game their relevant entity pay them for that is producing the best code they can, then cheating their colleagues (you know, all the accounting guys, sale reps, and even simple package manufacturer clerks, that make their day ?i.e. threir paycheck?)?

Just my two cents.
