"Microsoft asserted in court that IE was integrated with Windows 98, and that Windows 98 could not be made to operate without it. Australian computer scientist Shane Brooks later demonstrated that Windows 98 could in fact run with IE files removed [3]. Brooks went on to develop software designed to customize Windows by removing "undesired components", which now known as LitePC. Microsoft has claimed that the software did not remove all components of Internet Explorer, leaving many dynamic link library files behind"

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but last I checked, IE was embedded in Windows 95. Granted, IE 2.0 was a POS and NOBODY in their right (or left) mind used it - except maybe out of desperation to log into netscape.com to grab their browser.

IE, like many programs out there never really reach a useful level of maturity until the 3.0 version. In fact, NO ONE made a big stink about IE being part of Windows until '98 came out with IE 4 which torpedoed Netscape into DEEP water.

In fact, this whole IE trip is nothing more than a perfect example of what happens when Microsoft includes a half way decent app with Windows.

Why is it NO ONE has ever given a crap about Windows coming with a back up program? Because 1.) the program sucks for anything but the most basic back ups, 2.) most people don't back up and 3.) If they were serious about backing up, they'd spend the $$ and buy a REAL back up application. But if Microsoft EVER included a half way decent back up app in Vista or any future versions of Windows, you just KNOW someone is going to start screaming bloody murder.
