The Why...
Why do all of the security holes start:"If the user goes to a bad web site..."? Suppose Lee Iacoca started an ad: "If the car is driven to a gang infested ghetto, the driver and passengeres will be at risk." Or, "If you let children play with matches, the house might catch on fire." Let us find bugs and fix them without a lot of advertising fan fare.

Why? Because there are a select group of people who a.) don't know any better, b.) have NO self control when it comes to offers that are obviously TOO damn good to be true and c.) they don't give a rat's hind end if they get infected.

An analogy: We've been told how many BILLIONS of times that you should use a condom when doin' the horizontal mambo - especially if the partner in question belongs to a high risk group. And yet, AIDS and other STDs are still running rampant.

And when someone finds out that they've got HIV, or Hepatitis C or some other god awful life threatening illness - what's the FIRST thing that comes into their minds - "I didn't think..."

Unfortunately, there are people who surf the web pretty much the same way - sans protection. They go to sites offering "free" porn, get rich quick scams, hacker/cracker sites, sites offering herbal viagra and other cheap meds or other sites of ill repute and scratch their heads when they find out their computer is infested with spyware, viruses, key loggers and the like.

And of course, many of these same people are the ones who don't patch their computers regularly. They don't install service packs, they don't have a good antivirus program running and quite probably can care less - as long as they can get to the free porn, herbal viagra and other Barbara Streisand offered on the web.
