90% of the people that use windows don't even know what the registry is much less understand it. Many people don't know what spyware is and the ones who do are confused by all of the apps claiming to get rid of it.
I blame it on ignorance...If people knew better they'd keep the windows boxes off of the Internet and use something with a slightly more secure file system and no registry.
