Contracts? More like indentured servitude agreements!
The average new artist has to just about sell his or her soul to get a contract. The record company *might* give the artist some money up front, but then they take it back up front from sales revenue. By the time all the hidden costs, fees and repayments are figured, there is no money for the artists. That happened to some of the most influencial artists of the early days of recorded music. That's why you see some of the older ones still making the bus tours 300 out of 365 days a year-it's the only money they make (and they have to pay ASCAP to perform their own music!)

In some cases, the artists do not even own their names. Remember when Prince changed his name to that symbol? It was in protest of the fact that his contract gave the record company ownership of his name and likeness. He had a long, ugly court fight which he finally won, but still... David Bowie had the same problem. Michael Jackson owns the rights to many of the best Beatles and Elvis songs and that's how the has-been pays the bills.

The RIAA and its member companies see the artists coming and get the nets ready to scoop up some fresh fish for their fertilizer plants. Something sure stinks in the end!
