Don't forget a few other factors:
1) Increased competition from other forms of
entertainment. The drop in DVD prices alone has to be
having a major effect
2) The RIAA is releasing fewer cds every year. Profits are
actually up on a per-cd basis, but since there are fewer
cds overall, total profits have dropped. Also add in the
fact that they no longer sell cd singles, which has cut their
revenues.
3) the perceived drop in quality of the releases from the
RIAA
