Radio Stations pay ASCAP fees for permission to play songs. The radio stations recovers the fee through the advertisments they sell. Nightclubs venus also pay ASCAP fees.

As far as the free CDs--that is a marketing tool--they hope you will buy the next one. Do not assume that everyone can go to a nightclub where a particular group is playing. Some people live in small towns where the group will never play. Others chose not to go to nightclubs--that is one segment of the audience.
