Yes and No on SS#
I agree that it shouldn't be required on job applications, although it is used for a credit check on the applicant, but if you do get the job, it is needed by the employer for tax purposes.

Perhaps the SS# and the credit check should be the last steps in the hiring process. In any case the SS# should be deleted from files if the applicant does NOT get the job.
