An airliner is an even tougher case...
Building an airliner is an incredibly complex undertaking. More so than a car. But if an airplane design showed signs of significant safety issues, the whole lot of them would likely be grounded *until the problems were fixed*. So Microsoft held things up for six months while they focused on the initiative, but apparently didn't address many of the problems. Software doesn't hold the same degree of importance as an aircraft, but some of the issues with past versions (and perhaps current?) of Windows are the result of simple carelessness in coding. What MS is fixing isn't an easy task, but if they hadn't waited until two years ago to make a serious attempt at doing it right, it would be easier and quicker than it is now.

When Windows/DOS became a networkable OS, MS should have taken more steps to prevent some of these vulnerabilities. Especially since they were targeting it for businesses. Even without the Internet, some of these problems had the potential to be costly and MS has been aware of the importance of the Web for almost ten years now.

I use MS products myself, although as I've stated in these forums before, I won't move to XP because of the activation requirement. I find Win2K to be very stable, even I do tend to tax it unduly. Most of the problems seem to be in the apps now and many aren't from MS. So I won't bet against the company, because they can do amazing work. Then again, they can also do incredibly stupid things (leaving the firewall disabled by default in XP, putting easily accessible hooks into the OS in their apps and allowing critical system files to be overwritten by users without root access, to name just a few), so I would put any money on them, either.
