Does the exploit need to be differnt for each OS?

It's theoretically possible to craft a multiplatform executable, but there are few examples and those who've tried have found it extremely difficult even without trying to craft it as a buffer overflow.

Practically speaking, any exploits will have to be platform-specific due to the different services available. If the attack is going for system (rather than just user file) corruption, it will also need to exploit a second, totally system-specific, privelege escalation vulnerability.

Bottom line: ain't gonna happen.
