Thats an understement. Firewalls "filter" traffic and not block per-say. Firewalls can also manipulate data (nat). Filters can be done on the many aspects of a data packet, such as source/desination IP or ports, TTL, TOS, packet length, packet type, data contained, etc.

Most viruses/hacks seem to come in through ports other than 80 like TCP1443 (Blaster), UDP137-139, RPC, messager, etc.

Learn to love your firewall. It'll save your life (or your job).
