... these companies should have come out and told the truth -- that purely software based firewalls are essentially useless. The benefits are minimal.

If you are running high speed, continuous Internet connections, you had better have some hardware in place. If you have a dial-up connection, you probably don't need one.

All that a firewall does is to block traffic on specific ports. Most viruses attempt to use port 80, which is for HTML. And nobody blocks port 80 because then you couldn't browse the web.

If you don't believe me ... read up on security. In fact, most software based firewalls are default-configured to register lots of false positives to make it appear as if it were invaluable.
