These "silly" AC and Power supply issues

have been dogging our machine room for ages.

One day the AC died and the temperature shooted up to 110F. The machines shut down automatically but in the meantime we had plenty of hard failures in the RAIDs. Days lost recovering data / recreating file systems, LUNs, etc.

Some other time an AC valve got stuck open and drained the chilled water and we had the same problem. It was supposedly a 'preventive' maintenance to beef up the ... AC.

The 7 floor+2underground levels of labs in the CS buildiong was for one whole month w/o power when the distr. switch short-circuited in the basement and it couldn't get replaced due to the local company who built it going out of business....

Other time, power went out, and the aux power generator kicked in. When power returned, the power gen didn't want to disengage! and I've heard that people had to PHYSICALLY CUT WIRES !

Other time the power gen didn't kick in and we relied on battery power for 1/2 a day.

Recently, the UPS was out and power surge` hosed up several power supplies/scsi disks EVEN THOUGH the machines were at 'power off'. We should had pulled the power cords off the outlets!

Now we are still praying that AC or power wont go out, but this is almost unavoidable in the beginning of the semester.

Rediculous.
