Is there any evidence whatsoever that these recently patched vulnerabilities were responsible for those malware installations?

I think it is far more likely that previously patched vulnerabilities were used for this purpose.

And as I stated in a previous post, security is only one measure of quality. All the other factors must be taken into the equation, as well. I stand by my decision that MS software is right for me.
