mjb I am dissapointed at the shallow thinking process ....
``No, Microsoft didn't invent the internet''

That's ofcourse true. And wasn't it her charismatic leader who proclaimed it a 'fad' that nobody will use? Such a clear foresight this person, it is hearwarming... wink

`` (neither did any *nix creator, either). ''

UNIX, BSD in particular, had a GREAT ROLE to play. The TCP/UDP and IP modules that are close to what they are NOW were developed and tested on BSD Unix in the mid to late 70's. Other systems like, VAX/VMS offered support for it as well. The REFERENCE IP stack came from the BSD distributions.

``Look at it the other way: Microsoft brought people to the internet. In theory, without Microsoft, you would have an internet that existed on military bases and college campuses. How many people are going to run BSD at home? You have to take the good with the bad, and I'll bet most people agree that there is far more god than bad.''

MS TOOK WAY TOO long time to connect its platform to the Internet. They started doing this with their platform in the mid-90s. Until that time they werer promoting their Workgroup on a LAN systems using the NETBIOS technological ... jem.

I agree that PC + ms dos/win 3.1 was the platform for the masses.

Internet computing with the above was a 15+ years BACKWARD motion. Only in around year 2000 MS managed to clean up its ill implemented TCP/IP protocol stack. Ask the net admins how many 'strange' problems people had with NT 3.x, 4.0 (and predecessors) when heterogeneous hosts + windows were attached to the same LAN. Most strange problems traced to waky ms IP implementations.

I agree that MS rushed to fill a need with a terrible platform. ANd this TRUE until NOW with the PETABYTES of trash that moves around the Internet, either in SPAM email or viruses/worms progating clogging networks and systems.

We NEVER observed ANY WASTE of this SCALE and FREQUENCY with nonMS platforms in the Internet.

Is this is too hard to comprehend?

``Damn, there I go again using logic on the illogical...'' GOOD: if it is ILLOGICAL and you SEE this then you SHOULD BE ABLE TO PROVE this LOGICALLY: I am challenging you to do it.

hmmmm... mjb, needs to improve spelling skills first then go to more intellectually demanding tasks..... wink

Cheers ! -m
