You've got it wrong..
XP still picks up and uses your initial DHCP DNS settings..

But, as time progresses, XP ocansionally bypasses those settings and directly queries servers other than those you've specified. This probably occurs when there is some temporary interruption and a DNS timeout occurs.

(Note: A good hacker will have no problem tricking XP in querying outside DNS server.)

I personally observed this problem when setting up a local DNS proxy for portability. This was done since my new firewall considers IP loopback to be a spoofing security hazard (and is disabled).

I've found that XP was periodically retriving the wrong,(public instead of private), IP address for my mail server and failing. (surprise!!, surprise!!)

A dump of ipconfig /dnsdisplay indicated that XP had cached the information about a DNS server not specified in my TCP/IP configuration.
