Re: It is not just XP..
This whole thing got me interested in DNS Servers all over again. I hadn't managed real live ones myself since August 2003. I just set up a Cache-Only (not domain authoritative) Bind 9 Server here to experiment with.

It's interesting that dns clients (for the most part XP?) behave the way the average non-IT person would think they would. They query only their assigned DNS Servers (usually from the ISP).

But when you set up your own DNS Server that acts quite differently. It queries root name servers and is given name servers for the domain (the client) are looking up the address for, and has to go back and get the address for the name servers, and then ask them for the ultimate end A RR address.

But here's a good question: How does a DNS Server know wether it is being asked by a CLIENT or another SERVER?

And how do you poison a servers cache? It would have to "think" it was talking to an authoritative server and accept the Answers and cache them. Later it would return that cached answer as non-authoritative information.

(Wow, really MS XP sometimes queries other name servers... even MS itself? How often ... every 10th time, or what?)
