RE: Kaspersky debuts Linux antivirus in the U.S.
>> Ok this just made my day because its so funny.
The very thing linux haters bash Microsoft about
get some antivirus of their own. HA-HA! Best of
all is that this reassures what I've been saying
all along, linux is not secure or stable. Its
just a false sense of security and I'm glad to
see Kaspersky step up to the plate to admit it.
<<

I have run various flavors of Linux since 1999
almost exclusively. My systems have never,
repeat: never been compromised. If it ever is,
then I will look into getting AV software to
protect my Linux box. The last I heard, there
were no Linux virus 'in the wild'.

>> But wait! They formed a mailing list to keep
each other apprised of flaws, but zdnet
talkbackers keep telling me that linux has no
flaws!@ This simply can't be! <<

Flaws are not the same thing as viruses. Bug
tracking mechanisms have long been in place.
And I have never seen a responsible poster claim
that Linux has no flaws. I have seen them
correctly state that Linux is stable, scalable,
extensible, secure far beyond that of any
Microsoft offering. Before Microsoft began to
pay attention to security, these statements were
for the most part dead on true. While Microsoft
has come far in the past two or three years,
Linux 'out of the box' still beats Microsoft
handily on the four parameters listed above.
Does this make Linux the best choice for every
environment? Of course not, no more than
Microsoft is. Is it good enough to attract
developers and institutional backing? You bet.
Will Linux eventually replace Microsoft?
Probably not, but it will continue to attract
adherents and market share. The next two or
three years have the potential to be very, very
interesting.
