I agree. Follow the money. But I think both of you are at least partially right. If Firefox hadn't come out then Microsoft would have less pressure to keep up and keep people tied into IE. They could blame internet insecurity on the internet versus IE.

Making IE 7 a free upgrade -- but for XP/Vista only -- is the way that Microsoft makes money on the upgrades. And suddenly those of us with 2000 have to decide to either dump IE or upgrade.
