Cisco did what most any other company would do
Many programmers, whether they are working on commercial or open source products, will sit on a patch until the next point release comes out or until the exploit is in the wild and they are forced to update ahead of schedule. Most companies would also prefer to release the information in a manner that would not cause panic and sensationalism. It seems obvious to me that Mr. Lynn was actually trying to create panic and sensationalize an exploit before a formal release was ready. Everyone has done a great job of making him look like the victim when he is the one that went out of his way to spread the news prematurely. You have to wonder if he is trying to benefit personally from this. I've also considered the possibility that he may have violated an NDA that ISS had with Cisco . Anyway, in regard to another message on here, it would not be unusual for Cisco to release a software update for free if it fixes a security problem. I don't work for Cisco but I use quite a bit of their equipment and am generally very happy with it. Their gear is not perfect and can be buggy and frustrating at times but overall works well, is stable, and is secure when deployed properly.
