Incongruity
What's interesting to me about all of this is the incongruity of it. On the one hand, the U.S. is constantly berated (from both within and without) for not working with the rest of the world, for being a 'loose cannon', for not subscribing to the sensibilities of the much more mature Europeans. On the other hand, with this treaty the U.S. is supposedly going hand-in-hand with Europe (and supposedly the rest of the world, although I imagine this treaty like so many others would only apply to "developed" countries), and it's a bad thing.

So, should the U.S. walk in 'lock-step' with the rest of the world, or shouldn't it? If the rest of the world (through the UN, that nice group that can't seem to criticize anyone but the U.S.) decides that the Internet should be controlled by the UN, what should the U.S. do? If the rest of the world decides that "hate speech" should not be allowed on the Internet, what should the U.S. do?

Who decides when the U.S. goes along with everyone else and when it goes it alone?
