"Because U.S. law already includes much of what the treaty requires, the Senate's consent would be largely symbolic. The document requires nations to adopt laws governing search and seizure of stored data, surreptitious Internet wiretapping, cross-border assistance, and retention of Internet provider records upon police demand."
Another blow to the online privacy of the innocent.
Another section requires participating nations to outlaw the act of "making available" on the Internet any type of hardware or software that is designed for the purposes of committing a long list of computer crimes including "illegal interception" or "data interference." In some cases, even the mere possession of such hardware or software must be criminalized.
Holy Crap this law is gonna be so broad that technically owning a peecee is illegal. Using P2P will get you 10 years in jail,
"An addition to the treaty would require nations to imprison anyone guilty of "insulting publicly, through a computer system" certain groups of people based on characteristics such as race or ethnic origin, a requirement that could make it a crime to e-mail jokes about Polish people or question whether the Holocaust occurred."
So much for free speech huh? You just thought Bush was the worst to infringe on rights and liberties. This is the whole damn world. The whole world has lost its sense of humor. This political correctness is officially out of hand. I love the certain groups proviso btw. Can't waot to see that list.
"The U.S. Department of Justice has said that it would be unconstitutional for the United States to sign that addition because of the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of expression."
I can see it now. I pass along a joke that offends someone in Germany. Okay no problem as long as I do not travel to Germany. But let's say the Germans make a treaty with Mexico to prosecute violators of that law. I travel south of the border regularly. I can see it now being apprehended for passing along bad jokes. "Hey Gringo!"......."Yeah?"....."Whatcha in for?"....."Emailing bad jokes."........."Bwahahahaha Gringo, don't bend over while you are here." - Posted by: Squawkbox Posted on: 07/26/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
