Don't you mean that when they are attacked, they protect some information (the part held in the chip) from being taken. Its doesn't necessarily make the software less prone to attack.

I think the real improvement in these is the true random number generator. Currently I use a one-time-pad generated by sampling random noise to get my true random numbers its not very elegant.
