I don't think you are correct
Microsoft's desire for security probably has little to do with these purchase. The money is the reason pure and simple. Anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware all represent money making schemes.

Just think of the money they could make by being the ones who can put the holes in an OS and sell you the AV signature to stop any exploit before it's even known. That'd beat the competition hands down!

Can you say Monopoly on anti-virus software?
