Avg extra cost less than $1 per CD
The song writing royalty won't double the ridiculous list price of a CD. Songwriting royalties are less than $1 per disk currently, so now it may be $1.60 or so. The real question is value for the entertainment dollar. Games and DVDs are better buys for the dollar in many cases. 12 or 13 songs, and maybe 3 or 4 that you may really like. Whereas, with a game, you get the game plus a soundtrack. How many people do you know that kick back and just listen to music? I do, there are a lot less than there used to be thanks to PS2, DVD and PCs. Competition with other forms of entertainment is one of the contributing factors in the decline in CD sales by the major labels. The replacement boom that labels enjoyed for many years as people upgraded from vinyl to CD is long over. High prices, poor quality content and technology (P2P) also work in concert to lower sales. Only by embracing technology and being open to new business models will the music distribution business to continue to thrive.
