Right on the whole, wrong in detail
I agree with your posting. But I think those of us that care about port 25 may have to start requesting it... after justifying that we need it and taking responsibility (as you have) for the operation of a mail server.

I'm also afraid that the same thing may happen to other ports. At an ISP we blocked MS Exchange ports (actually that should be tunneled over IP anyway) because of a virus/worm problem in 2003. I think other ports could be blocked by ISP's as well. This could affect all sorts of services from 80 - web, to Game Server, IRC Servers.

In a way this is not unlike the Terrorist problem this country is facing. We (ISP's or Users) are forced to be afraid to do ordinary things (or to allow ordinary things to be done [ISPs]) because of the the "threat".

We should no more stop doing the same old ordinary things on the Internet than we should stop doing the ordinary things out in the world.
