WHAT!!!
I know that you are just being extreme. But if everyone who ever worked in IT that forgot to apply a password here and there would go to prison, then there would be no one left to manage anything. Everyone makes mistakes. Sure that is a major blunder. But it still was just a mistake and certainly not criminal.

I would bet a dime on a dollar that many of these machines were simply in the wrong place, set up by the wrong person and without the proper training to do the job right and make correct decisions. They simply made poor decisions based on poor knowledge and training.

These people were hired in other areas and only got the job because they have basic computer skills. I see it all the time were someone was hired for something, but could do very basic work on a network or computer. Boom, they became network admins and in charge of systems. Many could not even tell you what a TCP/IP stack is. But because the Government?s always cost cutting; they would not hire experience, properly train them or even give them a budget to outsource.

These people were probably given machines that came from somewhere else (or are standard configurations). Told to put something on it and they did just that. They never questioned security because they assumed the military installation was all the security they needed (and surely the boss would know better except they came from the same school of ignorance). On top of that you have to deal with the Governments ?style? of management and that rubs the wrong way with common sense.

And this is the poor fellow you want to send to jail? They may be the one with the target on their back; but that is because their boss is hiding behind them
