I was on the USS San Jacinto (CG-56) sister ship to the Yourktown homeport Norfolk VA. The combat / weapons systems of all US Warships are Unix. The engineering plant was being tested for the new smart ship systems. It consisted of NT machines to run the engineering plants. The concept is nice and actually used in the Isralli Navy... but they use Unix as well. And we build it for them. One other thing, my ship assisted the Yorktown back to port on several occassions when Microsoft Windows NT and later 2000 failed... BAD and basically rendered the engineering plants unusable. I had a classmate on board the Yorktown (he was also my beer drinking buddy) and the horror stories he had!

Eventually the smart ship program was shelved until Microsoft got it's act together. I think now they are using Linux or Unix. But on that I am not 100% sure. But for the weapons systems (also known as combat systems, and you can look this up in a library.) HPUX is used because of it's security, scalability and stability.

So this time I have to disagree with your post.
