Brilliant strategy?
Perhaps this guy stumbled upon a honeypot of false high-tech used to lure attackers to where they can be caught.

Of course, a honeypot only does its job if the security of the surrounding systems is at least competent. Doesn't sound like it was in this case. Taking this guy at his word, he was able to wander the system at will and stumbled across the interesting bits by methodical search, not by going to the easiest places first.
